Description

Tenderway Farmhouse is a farmhouse, likely dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations and extensions around the early 18th century. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble, with a rag slate roof to the front and asbestos slate to the rear, and a hipped roof to the main range. A brick axial chimney stack is present on the main range, along with an axial chimney stack to the higher end, originally an end stack before the range was extended. A stone chimney stack stands at the gable end of the rear wing.

The original 17th-century range now forms the rear wing of the house, and was initially a two-room plan with a through passage. The through passage and one room have been preserved. An 18th-century range was then built at the lower end of the through passage, extending across the slope and creating an overall ‘L’ shape. The 18th-century range likely comprised two rooms with an outshut to the rear, originally used for service rooms and now containing the staircase. In the 19th century, the 17th-century wing was extended with an outshut featuring a catslide roof extending over a single-storey extension on the outer higher side. A further narrow room was added to the higher end of the main range.

A courtyard is formed to the rear between the two ranges, along with a garage and outbuilding that adjoin a barn to the northwest. A stone rubble wall encloses the fourth side of the courtyard. The front facade is asymmetrical with five windows. The ground floor has a part-glazed 20th-century plank door to the left, and a 20-pane sash window. A 20th-century glazed conservatory is situated to the right. Additional windows include a 2-light casement, a 12-pane sash, two 16-pane sashes, a 12-pane sash, and a 1-light casement with glazing bars. The rear wing has 20th-century casements with glazing bars and a 19th-century 3-light casement in the inner angle.

Inside the 17th-century wing, features include chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops, a blocked-up through passage, a 19th-century staircase in the outshut extension, a 19th-century stair window with decorative glazing, and a circa 17th-century 3-panel door on the first floor. The roof was possibly replaced in the early 18th century, featuring chamfered principals halved, lapped, and pegged at the apex, with collars partly halved, lapped, and pegged. The 18th-century range had a partition removed from the higher end of the through passage. Later additions include 20th-century chimney pieces, plastered ceilings, and a 20th-century staircase. The roof of the main range has five trusses dating from the early 18th century, with two further trusses from the late 19th century spanning the extension. The principals are slightly curved, resting on a wall plate and halved, lapped and pegged at the apex. Collars are cambered, halved, lapped and pegged into principals. Some slightly trenched purlins are also present.
