Description
Barcelona Cottages comprise three estate cottages, now two private houses and two flats, built in 1856 and 1857. They were constructed for the Trelawne estate. The buildings are of stone rubble construction with slate roofs, featuring shaped bargeboards and three gabled ends to the front, with a gabled cross wing to one side elevation. Stone rubble chimney stacks are present on the right-hand side and rear elevations, as well as on the gable ends. The cottages are in a Gothic style.
The original range has two storeys and a regular four-window front. It consists of two shallow projecting gabled wings, flanking a central range containing two entrances. The ground floor of the wings features two segmental dressed stone arches, with three-light casement windows and ornamented lights above. The central range has a part-glazed 20th-century door beneath a slate lean-to canopy on corbelled brackets to the left. Adjoining the left side is a stone rubble porch with a half-hipped slate roof and a two-centred chamfered granite arch containing a glazed door. A datestone is positioned above the left-hand entrance. The first floor of the wings has two three-light casements beneath slate hoods on corbelled brackets in the gabled ends. Attic lights are positioned above, with a trefoil on the left and a slit on the right. The central range features two 19th-century two-light casement windows. A slightly later range on the left has a slightly canted gable end to the road, with a two-light casement with dressed stone arch on the ground floor and a two-light casement above, beneath a slate hood on corbelled brackets. A three-window regular side elevation incorporates a projecting gabled wing on the left, with an entrance recessed within a lean-to porch in the angle.
The interior was not inspected. Barcelona cottages are largely complete with unaltered fenestration on the front and left-hand side elevations.
