Description

3 and 4 Quay Street is a town house dating from the 1730s, which was later converted into two houses in the early 19th century and then transformed into shops in the late 19th century. The front is painted brick, while the rest of the building features stone rubble, some painted and some stuccoed, with slate hanging on the left-hand gable. The roof is covered with asbestos slate and has two gabled dormers that retain remnants of 18th-century casements. There are brick stacks at each end. The building has a double-depth plan on the left side and a single depth on the right, with an original stair hall located behind the right-hand room and a service wing behind the stair hall.

It stands two storeys tall with attics and has an irregular two-window front. The early 19th-century windows are tripartite hornless sashes with glazing bars, topped by a moulded wooden eaves cornice. The ground floor features a wide passage doorway on the left with plank doors, one of which has a round-arched wicket. In the center is a small mid-19th-century two-light shop window with pilasters, consoles, and a cornice, while the right side has a late 19th-century shop front with similar decorative elements and a sloping fascia over slender mullions.

At the rear, there are two mid-18th-century sashes with thick glazing bars, and a similar paired sash is found on the right-hand wall of the stair hall. Inside, there are many interesting features from the 18th century, although some were vandalized in 1988. Notable elements include a fine-quality moulded and carved panelled plaster ceiling in part of the original stair hall, fielded dado panelling on the ground floor, and in the front and left-hand chamber above the rooms. Several chimney-pieces and many panelled doors, most with H-L hinges, are also present.
