Description
The churchyard gate, located about 18 metres east of the Church of St James, dates from the mid-19th century. It features a single leaf pedestrian wrought iron gate composed of eight uprights evenly spaced within a perimeter frame that includes a middle rail. The top rail is bowed and adorned with nine spike finials. Two semicircular hoops connect at the middle rail, and there are three-quarter length intermediate verticals topped with spear finials. The gate piers are square in section and are capped with ovolo-moulded stones, which are believed to have originated from Stowe, a building constructed in 1679 and demolished in 1739. In that year, the Kilkhampton Churchwardens purchased 36 feet of coping stone from Stowe at a cost of 6d per foot. This gate is included for its group value.
