Description
NORTH PETHERWIN SX 29 SE 4/71 Godcott Farmhouse and cart shed - adjoining on west
II
Farmhouse and cartshed attached on the west. Circa late C16 or early C17, possibly with earlier origins, extended in early C19. Rendered and painted stone rubble. Slate roof with gable end on left and hipped end on right. 2 end stacks with brick shafts on left, projecting lateral stack to rear right and axial stack with brick shaft on front slope to right. Plan: Original plan probably of 3-room and cross or through passage arrangement which is now the rear (north) part of house. The ground slopes down to the right (east) and it is uncertain where the original entrance was situated. The room on the higher left (west) hand side was heated by an end stack and the central hall by a projecting lateral stack on the back. The lower room on right (east) appears to have been unheated. In circa early C19 a second parallel range was added across the south front forming a double-depth plan; the early C19 front range has a wide entrance hall flanked by 2 principal rooms and the earlier C17 north range was relegated to accommodate the service rooms. In the later C19 a cart-shed was added on the west end of the house and in late C19 or early C20 a dairy was added to the rear of the house. Exterior: 2 storeys. The C19 front has a symmetrical 3 window facade plus 1 window to the right; moulded plinth; the ground slopes down to right. Complete early C19 hornless sashes. C20 glazing inserted in the C19 panelled double doors to left of centre with C19 semi-circular traceried fanlight above. 16-pane sash to left -and 16- pane and 12-pane sashes to right with similar sashes on first floor. Entrance to cellar in lower right-hand end. Rear elevation with two 2-centred arched C19 windows with intersecting glazing bars on first floor. Attached on the west end is an open- fronted cartshed, facing the yard on the north, with roughly cut granite piers and a rag slate roof with gable ends. Interior: The west room in the C17 range on the north retains its deeply chamfered floor joists with straight cut stops and chamfered and stopped secondary beams. The C17 ovolo-moulded door frame and studded door may have been reset in a C19 partition which does not appear to correspond with the floor joists above. Chamfered granite surround to fireplace. The ceilings to the hall and lower room on the east are plastered and the partitions have been altered. The roof structure appears to be almost entirely of the mid C19 with a king-post truss roof spanning both the C17 and C19 ranges.
