Description

No. 18 is a town house built around 1798 by builder Hill for Nathaniel Carkeet, an upholsterer. The building features a granite ashlar basement, with local freestone ashlar above, and a natural slate roof that has a parapet pierced by three late 19th century or early 20th century pedimented dormers. There are brick chimneys located over the gable ends. The house has a double-depth plan, with a central entrance hall that leads to two front reception rooms and a deep service wing on the left side. It stands two storeys over a basement (which is blocked on the left) plus an attic, and has a symmetrical three-window front.

The central entrance is framed by a Tuscan doorcase with slender engaged columns, a moulded entablature, panelled reveals, a panelled door, and an original arcaded fanlight. There is a first-floor sill string, a moulded parapet cornice, and late 19th century or early 20th century horned four-pane sash windows under shallow segmental arches with projecting key blocks. The original panelled doors to the basement are also preserved.

Inside, the house retains much of its original carpentry and plasterwork, including moulded and carved ceiling cornices and bands. The property is complemented by replica iron railings with a bridge to the right of the entrance and a granite forecourt plinth.
