Description
Nos. 14 and 15 are a pair of town houses built around 1798 for John Webb, a merchant. The houses feature granite ashlar at the basement level, with local freestone ashlar above, and are topped with an asbestos slate roof that has three hipped dormers set behind a parapet and brick end stacks. The design follows a double-depth plan and consists of two storeys plus an attic over the basement, presenting a symmetrical three-window front. Notable architectural details include rusticated quoins, a string course, and a parapet cornice. The central entrance is marked by a pair of round-headed doorways within an open wooden Doric porch that has mutules on the cornice. The doors are five-panel with plain fanlights, and there are 20th-century horned 12-pane sash windows beneath shallow segmental arches with projecting key blocks. The original panelled doors lead to the basements. Although the interior was not inspected, it is likely to be of interest. The forecourt features original granite steps that are complemented by original wrought-iron railings and additional granite steps leading down to the basement.
