Description

77 and 78 Lemon Street are a pair of town houses, now used as offices, built around 1809 by the builder Robert Blee. The front is made of local freestone ashlar, with a roof that is hidden behind a parapet and a brick end stack on the left. The buildings are a double-depth mirror-image pair with a passage between them. They rise three storeys above a blocked basement and feature an overall symmetrical four-window front. There is a plinth and a central round-arched passage doorway flanked by two smaller doorways, each with projecting impost blocks, six-panel doors, and plain fanlights. Other openings are topped with shallow segmental arches that have projecting keyblocks. The buildings have moulded cornices under the parapets, with a bolder cornice on No. 78 (to the right). The original windows are hornless sashes with glazing bars, except where the glazing bars have been removed from the ground-floor sashes and the lower halves of the first-floor sashes of No. 77, and later horned sashes have been added to the second floor of No. 78. Inside, there are many original features, including moulded and carved plaster ceiling cornices and bands.
