Description

This group of four tombchests, located 11 to 12.5 meters south of the south aisle of the Church of St Endelienta, dates from 1752, 1770, 1771, and 1780 and commemorates members of the Philp and Brown families. One tombchest honors Thomas Philp and Jane Read Philp, dating from 1770, and features a later brick chest with a slate lid, inscribed with high-quality serif lettering. It memorializes Francis Philp of Pendogget, who died in 1780, and his wife Honor, who died in 1789. This tombchest is made of stone rubble with a moulded granite plinth and a slate lid, inscribed in upper and lower case serif lettering: "Out of the sincerest regard for one of the tenderest of Husband's his widow Honor Philp has caused this tomb to be erected on his grave." Another tombchest commemorates Thomas Philp of Pendogget, who died in 1752, his wife Jane, who died in 1766, and their three sons William, who died in 1762, Thomas, who died in 1724, and Thomas, who died in 1730. The last tombchest is a later brick chest with a slate lid, dedicated to Thomas Brown of Lannow, who died in 1778, and his son Thomas, who died in 1771.
