Description
The dovecot, located about 40 metres west of Moditonham Park, was built in the mid-18th century as a combination dovecot and folly, formerly part of the grounds of Moditonham House. It is constructed from slatestone and Devon limestone rubble, with brick dressings, and originally had a slate roof.
The dovecot features an octagonal tower design with flanking walls, although the wall to the left is partially demolished. The structure stands three stories tall, with the ground level raised at the rear. The front has a round-arched doorway that is partially blocked by a plain door. On the first floor, there is a central cross loop and two pointed arched lights with brick heads on either side. At the rear, a timber lintel from a former door remains, now below ground level, along with a tall narrow window opening to the rear left. The attached rubble walls on the right and left include a section on the right that is about 5 metres long and 2 metres high, featuring one pointed arched window opening with a brick head.
Internally, the dovecot has a circular plan. The ground floor walls are plastered and contain a row of four nesting boxes on either side. The upper level walls are brick-lined, with rows of square pigeon-holes. The rear door has been blocked with rubble.
This dovecot is uniquely designed and was intended to be viewed from Moditonham House to the south, resembling a Gothick folly.
