Description

The Brown monument is located in the churchyard against the south wall of the nave of the Church of St Mary in Botus Fleming. This 18th-century headstone and footstone are made of slate. The headstone features a rounded top with two putti carved in relief supporting a central roundel, along with crossed bones on the left side. It bears admonitory verses and an inscription dedicated to Mary Brown, who died in 1734 or 1735, although the exact date of death is uncertain as both stones provide alternatives. The footstone has a simple nowy head and includes a carved primitive skull with crossed bones, also referencing M. Brown, 1734 or 1735.
