Description
The Bidwell is a holy well-house located in Botus Fleming, likely dating from the late 15th century and repaired in the 20th century. It is constructed from granite and slatestone rubble with a stone roof. The building has a small rectangular plan, built into the bank at the rear, with gable ends at both the front and rear.
The front features a 4-centred arched doorway, which has chamfered granite jambs and arch. There is a 19th-century wrought iron gate across the doorway, adorned with trefoil finials on the shafts. The front gable has raised coped verges, and there are no windows present.
Inside, there is a slate floor and a plastered vaulted roof. The rear of the building includes an image niche with a segmental head, housing a 19th-century statue of the Virgin. The Bidwell is marked on the 1907 Ordnance Survey.
