Description
Moditonham Lodges and piers are a pair of lodges dating from the late 18th century, located at the entrance to Moditonham House. The lodges are constructed from slatestone rubble, with some areas rendered, and feature hipped slate roofs with brick chimney stacks. Each lodge is designed as a single plan, with the entrance originally facing the drive and heated by a stack on the outer side. There are later 20th-century additions to both lodges.
The exterior of each lodge is two stories tall and was originally symmetrical. The north lodge is unrendered and has a 20th-century glazed door on its west front, along with a two-story 20th-century addition on the left side. The right side, facing the drive, has an ogee head 2-light casement window at ground floor, which was formerly the front door, and two 2-light 20th-century casements at the first floor. The rear also features a similar ogee head 2-light casement at ground floor.
The south lodge has a rendered west front with an ogee head 2-light casement at ground floor. It includes a single-story 20th-century addition on the outer right side and an ogee 2-light casement, which was formerly a door, on the inner side. The rear has an ogee 2-light casement at ground floor.
The lodges are flanked by a pair of granite ashlar gate piers, each topped with square caps and a large ball finial on a circular plinth with roll-moulding. The interior of the lodges has not been inspected.
