Description
The Martyn Monument is a chest tomb with an obelisk, dating from the 18th century, located in Botus Fleming. It is made of limestone and features an enclosure of cast iron railings. The chest tomb is square in shape, with a moulded plinth and a flat plain lid. An obelisk, which stands on a chamfered plinth, is positioned on top of the tomb. The side of the tomb bears a long explanatory inscription that notes William Martyn's preference for burial in unconsecrated ground, stating he had "no superstitious veneration for church or churchyard." This monument commemorates William Martyn, who died in 1762. The tomb is set on a rubble plinth with granite coping, and the cast iron railings are topped with spike finials.
