Description
Maer Farmhouse is a house with a core dating back to the 16th century, significantly altered in the early 18th century and remodelled in the early 19th century, with 20th-century changes. The exterior is stone rubble, rendered to the front and the first floor at the rear, and has a slate roof with rendered chimneys on the left and right gable ends. A rendered chimney is also on the gable end of the rear left wing. Examination of the roofspace reveals the remains of a 16th-century single-depth range. The rear left wing has similar roof trusses; it is a separate build, with a former external wall approximately half a metre from the rear wall of the main range. The main range was completely remodelled in the early 19th century, including a gabled rear stair projection. A rear right projection may date to the 16th century. The front has three bays from the early 19th century, with a 20th-century front door set within a Doric porch, featuring an entablature with a modillion frieze and fluted columns. There are 12-pane horned sash windows, with a 20th-century French window replacing the one originally on the right of the porch.
The ground floor room on the left has a moulded plaster ceiling from the early 18th century. The early 19th-century staircase has replaced newel posts and stick balusters, with a round-headed stair window featuring marginal glazing lights in the stair hall. Roof trusses in the rear left wing have collars lap-dovetailed into principals. Remains of two similar trusses are present in the main range.
