Description
The Carter and Matthews headstones, located approximately 12 meters north of the west end of the Church of St. Breaca in Breage, are a group of four headstones dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are made of slate or a combination of slate and granite and are positioned at the heads of parallel graves, with their incised inscriptions facing west.
The leftmost stone is a square-headed slate monolith dedicated to Elizabeth, the wife of Richard Carter, who died in 1799 at the age of 22. The second stone from the left is an incised slate monolith with a shaped head, commemorating James Matthews of Tranno, who died in 1791 at the age of 74, along with James, the son of John and Charity Matthews, who died on June 21, 1808, at 11 days old, and Henry Williams, who died in 1823 at the age of 21.
The third stone from the left is an incised slate monolith with a complex shaped head, inscribed by Robert Olivery of St. Minver, honoring John Matthews of Tranno, who died in 1853 at the age of 82, and his wife Charity, who died in 1847 at the age of 75. The rightmost stone is a flattened ogee-headed dressed granite monolith with a shaped-headed incised slate insert, dedicated to John Matthews, who died in 1839 at the age of 42, and his wife Mary, who died in 1894 at the age of 82.
