Description
The Breage, Germoe and Godolphin War Memorial is a First World War memorial that has additional names added after the Second World War. It is situated within the churchyard of St Breaca’s Church and is made of granite.
The memorial features a Celtic-style wheel-head cross with raised bosses at the center and on each arm. This cross is mounted on a tapering shaft, which stands on a two-stepped square plinth. The entire structure is set on a single-stepped square base, with an inclined stone scroll at the front.
The inscriptions on the memorial are leaded and painted black, with names listed down the shaft. The top step of the plinth is inscribed with the message: "THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY PAST AND PRESENT INHABITANTS OF THE PARISH OF BREAGE, TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BREAGE, GERMOE AND GODOLPHIN, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The lower step bears the inscription: "DEATH HATH NO MORE DOMINION OVER THEM." A later panel is dedicated to those who made the supreme sacrifice in the World War 1939 – 1945, listing their names.
