Description

Higher Sutton Town Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof that has hipped ends. The thatch extends down over an outshut on the left side, while a single-storey lean-to at the rear has a rag slate roof. The house features a brick chimney on the left and a stone rubble chimney on the right.

The layout consists of three rooms and a cross or through passage, with the ground gently sloping down on the right. The entrance is near the center, leading into a passage that has a 20th-century framed stair added. The larger hall-kitchen is located on the higher left side of the passage and is heated by the end stack. On the lower right side, there is a small unheated room, likely originally a dairy, with a small parlour beyond it, which is heated by the end stack. This arrangement appears to be original, with stone rubble cross walls extending up to the first floor level.

At the rear, a single-storey service outshut was added in the 18th or 19th century, along with a 19th-century lean-to extension on the left side. The exterior features two storeys with a regular 1:3 window arrangement, including 20th-century windows in slightly widened openings. There is a part-glazed 19th-century door with a porch near the center, flanked by two 20th-century windows, and three 20th-century windows on the first floor. The thatched roof continues down over the left end to about one meter above ground level.

Inside, the hall-kitchen has heavy unmoulded closely set floor joists, while other ceilings are plastered. The fireplaces have been blocked by later grates. Only the hall-kitchen and passage were inspected during the survey in 1987.
