Description

This building is a barn located in the estate yard at Lanhydrock Park, dating from the late 19th century but incorporating features from an earlier period, including a window that was removed from the Church of St Hydroc during its 19th-century restoration. The barn is constructed from slatestone and granite rubble, with granite dressings and quoins. It has a slate roof with ridge tiles, a gable end featuring raised coped verges and kneelers, and a cross finial on the south gable end, while the north end is hipped.

The barn has a rectangular plan, built into the bank at the rear, with an attached cart shed at the north end. There is a wall connected to the southeast that includes a gateway, which separates the Higher Garden from the estate yard. The exterior features a two-storey front with two doors and two windows on the ground floor, all with granite lintels, and a single-storey lean-to on the left. The first floor includes a central loading door, a window on either side, and an irregular row of square pigeon holes. The north end is blind and has an attached single-storey open-fronted cart shed with three bays.

The south gable end is notable for its 4-centred arched roll-moulded granite doorway, which has carved spandrels and a square hood mould, along with a 19th-century panelled and studded door. Above this doorway is a re-set blind three-light granite window featuring chamfered mullions, a 4-centred arch, and a hood mould. This end of the barn has been given special architectural treatment as it faces the Higher Garden. The attached wall on the right is made of rubble, approximately 3 metres high and 15 metres long, with a granite doorway that has a 2-centred arch, hollow-chamfered with recessed spandrels, and a 19th-century panelled and studded door. At the rear of the barn, there are central double doors accessed by a ramp over a ditch, with an additional door to the right and a window to the left; below this, there are two windows to the left and a central loading door above. The interior has not been inspected.
