Description

Maids House is a Grade II listed building located in Quethiock, dating from around 1633 to 1640. Originally built as four one-room almshouses for poor spinsters of the parish by William Coryton, it has since been converted into one cottage. The building features painted stone rubble with some repairs in painted rendered concrete block and has a rag slate roof with a hipped end on the left and a gable end on the right. A brick stack on the ridge near the center has replaced the original stone rubble stack.

The cottage has a two-room plan with axial stacks between, featuring back-to-back fireplaces. It is 1½ storeys high and was originally symmetrical with a two-window front. There are two entrance doors near the center, which have chamfered granite lintels and jambs with pyramid stops. The doors are 20th-century, part-glazed, plank doors. Flanking the entrances are two three-light granite mullioned windows with hollow chamfered mullions, although the left-hand window has been renewed. Above, there are two half-dormer windows with slate raking roofs, inserted in the 1970s, which include reused one-light and three-light casements with glazing. The dormers also have casements at the rear.

Inside, there are two granite fireplaces that are back-to-back, featuring chamfered granite lintels and jambs with pyramid stops, and a granite hearth in the right-hand fireplace. The ceiling beams have been replaced. The roof consists of six bays with heavy principals that are chamfered below the collars, which have straight cranked feet that die into the wall. The wall plate may have been raised, and the collars are chamfered and dovetailed into the principals.
