Description
The cross located to the south of the Church of St Hugo in Quethiock is a Grade II* listed churchyard cross of Hiberno-Saxon type, made of granite. It features a round base measuring 4 feet 6 inches in diameter and a 14-foot tall shaft that is rectangular in shape and slightly tapered. The shaft is divided into three panels and is intricately carved with four-cord, double beaded, angular plaitwork, although it is eroded. The sides of the shaft display a continuous panel of foliated scrollwork. The cross has a wheel head with cusps in the openings, and the cusping is framed by round rolls.
The construction includes mortice and tenon joints between the wheel head and the shaft, as well as between the lower and middle panels of the shaft. The cross was re-erected in 1882 after the base and head had been buried, and the shaft had been broken into two pieces and used as gate posts. It is noted that, apart from the cross in Mylor churchyard, this cross is the tallest in Cornwall.
