Description

Farmhouse and garden wall. Possibly dating from the early 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of stone rubble, with slate hanging on the upper right-hand gable end and the rear elevation. It has a scantle slate roof, cement-washed, with a lower left-hand gable end and a half-hipped right-hand higher end. The rear wing has an asbestos slate roof. There are chimney stacks: a lower projecting gable end stack to the kitchen on the left with a 20th-century brick shaft; a rendered axial brick stack at the higher end of the hall; a rendered brick end chimney stack to the inner room at the higher end on the right; a projecting truncated chimney stack to the rear wing; and a 20th-century front lateral brick shaft to an outshut on the lower right-hand gable end.

The farmhouse follows a three-room and cross-passage plan with a kitchen at the lower end on the right, and a heated wing at the rear of the passage. The hall and inner room are of near-equal size. The original position of the staircase is uncertain.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a regular three-window front. The ground floor has three probable 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, set beneath dressed stone segmental arches. A probable 20th-century part-glazed door is set within a dressed stone segmental arch, placed asymmetrically between the first and second window openings. A straight joint is visible to the left of the door. The first floor has three probable 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. A C19 outshut was added to the lower left-hand gable end, with a probable 19th-century lean-to outshut to the rear, between the rear projecting wing and the lower end. A 20th-century glazed outshut of concrete block with 20th-century fenestration and a corrugated asbestos roof is also present. The interior includes fireplaces that have been partly blocked. The inner room and first floor were not inspected.

A stone rubble wall runs along the front of the house, enclosing a small garden. Higher Wringworthy Farmhouse is notable for its plan, reflecting a probable early 19th-century building that combines the traditional three-room layout with a large, parlour-like inner room of the same size as the hall.
