Description

The Church of St Winwalo is a parish church with 12th-century origins, significantly rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries. It is constructed of stone rubble with a roughly moulded plinth and has a slate roof. The layout comprises a nave, chancel (combined into one space), a west tower, and a south porch. The overall length of the nave and chancel is approximately 45 feet. The church is situated in an isolated location.

The exterior is characterized as a low church. The two-stage west tower has two low weathered set-offs on its north and south sides, topped with a battlemented parapet and crocketted pinnacles. A blocked west door is above a narrow lancet window. There are two-light belfry openings with slate louvers. Windows include 14th, 15th, and 16th-century single and two-light lancets, and cusped square-headed windows. A north door retains remains of a Norman tympanum, illustrated by Sedding. The south porch has a chamfered segmental arch dating to the 16th century, with a circa 17th-century door within a later frame.

Inside, the church features a circa 15th or early 16th-century waggon roof with moulded ribs, carved bosses, and a carved wallplate. The walls are plastered and painted with cement-based paint. A depressed 2-centred granite tower arch is present, with an inner arch resting on moulded corbelled brackets. Remnants of rood loft stairs are visible in the north wall. A Holy water stoup is located on the north wall of the nave. A 1900 altar and a Norman font, also illustrated by Sedding, with a rope-band decorated bowl and a waisted, moulded base, are also present. A straight joint is visible on the north wall, potentially indicating a former extension or alterations to the rood loft stair.
