Description
Nos 25 and 26 Trefusis Road are two houses that were originally a single house, built around the early 18th century. The structure is made of shale rubble, with the sides and rear painted, and features Flemish bond brick on the first floor of the front. It has slate sills, flat freestone or brick arches, and wooden lintels at the sides and rear. The roofs are steep, with brick chimneys on the gable ends of the main roof and a large gabled lateral brick chimney over an external rubble breast on the right-hand side of the rear wing of No 26. The roofing material is dry Delabole slate for No 25 and scantle slate for No 26, including the wing. The front has a modillioned eaves cornice and an overall I-shaped plan, originally single-depth with later service rooms added. Each house has one front room, and No 26 has an original service wing at right angles to the rear. The entrance cross passages are located in the middle. The building was remodelled around the early 19th century into two houses, but it was originally designed with two reception rooms, a central passage leading to the stair behind the right-hand room, and a service wing. It is two storeys high and originally had a symmetrical five-window west road front with a central doorway. However, the doorway has been altered, with a new entrance inserted to the left of the original doorway, and a window to the right of the original doorway has been blocked, with new windows added in between. The doorways feature stucco surrounds and a 20th-century hood on scrolled wrought iron brackets. No 25 has PVC windows from the circa 1980s, while No 26 has 16-pane horned sash windows. The interior has not been inspected, but No 26 is reported to have fine original panelling and arched niches in two of the rooms. This building must have been an important house in Flushing and, despite alterations, it retains some notable original features.
