Description

SW 63 SW CROWAN CLOWANCE

4/127 Farm building at approximately 30 - metres south west of Clowance Farmhouse GV II

Cartshed, later converted to shippon. Circa early C19. Front wall of close spaced granite monolithic posts, the spaces between partly infilled with rubble except at doorways. Scantle slate monopitch roof, built as a lean-to against part of a kitchen garden wall, rubble with buttresses at bay intervals on the building side, and brick at the rear. Over each buttress is a ball finial. Long rectangular 6-bay plan, the north front originally open and carried on granite posts; later converted to shippon and more piers inserted along the front, some to form doorways, the others with part rubble infill between and ventilators over. The front is unaltered since circa the mid C19 and has the original diagonally set wooden ventilator bars and ledged doors. Interior has the original half king post roof structure with morticed and pegged joints. One of a group of unspoiled buildings ranged around a sloping partly cobbled farmyard, the whole set in mature wooded surroundings.
