Description
Somerton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the 17th century. It is built of stone rubble, with the front painted and rendered. The roof is made of rag slate, featuring gable ends and a catslide over the rear outshot. There are projecting stone rubble end stacks, including one at the rear outshot that has a granite moulded string.
The original plan of the house is uncertain, but it seems to consist of a two-room layout with a through passage, heated by end stacks. Straight joints in the external masonry suggest that the service outshot was added to the rear. The end stack that heats the left-hand room of the outshot has granite moulded strings and appears to be stylistically from the 17th century.
The exterior has two storeys and a symmetrical three-window front that was remodeled in the mid to late 19th century, featuring 19th-century six-pane sash windows. The central entrance has a four-panel door. The interior was not accessible during the survey in 1986, but an internal inspection could provide more information about the date and development of the plan and may reveal interesting features.
