Description
The Egloskerry village War Memorial is a village memorial unveiled in August 1921. It is made of Cornish granite with inset lead lettering and is located in the village churchyard, to the west of the Church of St Keria, which is also listed as Grade II.
The memorial features a cross with a shaft and a stepped base that rises from a platform. The cross head is designed as a Celtic wheel head, with round, cushion-shaped bosses at the arms and center, and the arms flared at their ends. The tapered shaft rises from a base consisting of three steep steps, beneath which is a platform. Surrounding the monument is a paved enclosure marked by four obelisk-shaped pillars at the corners, which are linked by chains.
The top step of the base is inscribed with the words: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF EGLOSKERRY / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918’. The names of the fallen are listed on the step below, while the bottom step bears the inscription ‘THEY LIVE FOR EVERMORE / 1939 – 1945’, along with the names of those who fell in that conflict. A paved path connects the monument to the entrance of the churchyard.
