Description
The garden walls located approximately 400 metres east-south-east of Trengwainton House were originally built for kitchen gardens in 1814. Constructed from Flemish bond brick with terracotta copings, these walls form a planned range of five square gardens on sloping ground that face south. Each enclosure is bordered by a drive and a stream at the bottom.
These walls were erected during the enlargement of Trengwainton House by Sir Rose Price, a West Indian sugar planter. In 1867, the property was acquired by T S Bolitho, a banker with family ties to Cornish mining. The remodelling and extensions in 1897 were undertaken by his son T R Bolitho, with an unknown architect. T R Bolitho, along with head gardener A Creek and with advice from J C Williams of Caerhays and P D Williams of Lanarth, developed a new garden featuring shrubs from New Zealand, Australia, Chile, and the Himalayas. In 1929, G Johnstone of Trewtihen and Lawrence Johnston of Hidcote invited Bolitho to participate in a plant hunting expedition to Assam and Burma, which resulted in seeds that contributed to the notable rhododendron collection at Trengwainton.
