Description
Arallas Farmhouse is a C18 farmhouse, with an addition from around the mid-19th century and later alterations and additions. It is constructed of stone rubble, with some slate hanging. The roof is slate, with ridge tiles, a gable end to the left and a hipped end to the right. Axial stacks feature brick shafts. A further addition from around the mid-19th century is of stuccoed stone rubble with a hipped slate roof, ridge tiles, and stacks with rendered shafts.
The original plan seems to consist of a pair of small two-room houses, likely dating from the 18th century, with a single-room kitchen wing to the rear right. Around the mid-19th century, a large single-room addition incorporating a stairhall was built to the right end, providing a separate rear entrance through a porch. This addition contains its own stairwell along the rear and a large front room, heated by a stack on the right side.
The main range is two storeys high, with two bays in stone rubble to the left and three bays, slate-hung, to the right. The left bays feature two 19th-century 12-pane sashes with granite lintels at ground and first floor levels. The three bays to the right have two 16-pane sashes at ground floor and three 16-pane sashes at first floor, all dating from the 19th century. A taller, slightly projecting block to the right of the 19th-century addition has two-storey canted bays, each with four-pane sashes and sidelights at both ground and first floor levels. The left end of this block is blind. The right side of the 19th-century addition has a four-pane window at ground floor and a large 19th-century 12-pane sash lighting the stairhall. A 19th-century porch with a hipped roof and a half-glazed 19th-century door sits in the angle to the main range.
A two-storey rear wing, rendered in appearance, is set back to the right, with a 19th-century 16-pane sash at ground floor and two similar sashes at first floor. A single-storey lean-to with a loft over adjoins to the right, featuring a two-light window at ground floor and a 16-pane sash above. To the rear, the right hand end house has a brick porch and a blocked door with a single light, as well as a 19th-century 16-pane sash within an exposed box at first floor level. A single-storey outhouse is attached to the end right.
The rear of the middle range has rag-slate hanging, a two-light two-pane 19th-century casement at ground floor to the left, a 19th-century 16-pane sash to the right, and a 20th-century door centrally. Two 19th-century 16-pane sashes are located at first floor. The rear wing incorporates a single-storey and loft lean-to, used as a dairy, with a two-light casement at ground floor and a 16-pane sash at first floor, both with brick segmental arches. A door provides access to the rear of the dairy. The interior has not been inspected.
