Description

Two cottages and an adjoining stable building were constructed around the middle to late 18th century, with the stable likely added in the early to mid 19th century. The building is made of granite rubble with large quoins, and has a rag slate roof with gable ends. The roof on the left-hand side is slightly higher than the rest. Internal stone rubble end stacks are present, with the right-hand stack having been rebuilt to serve a neighbouring property.

The left-hand cottage is likely the earlier of the two, originally featuring a single room plan. The entrance is centrally placed, leading directly into the ground-floor room, which is heated by an end stack on the left. A circa mid-19th century staircase is located on the right, possibly replacing an earlier staircase or ladder. The right-hand cottage also features a single room plan, with an entrance on the left-hand side, probably directly into the ground floor room that is heated by the end stack on the right. A circa early-19th century staircase is located on the rear gable end to the right of the fireplace. Entrance porches were probably added in the late 18th or early 19th century.

Around the early to mid-19th century, a small outbuilding was added to the left-hand gable end of the original left-hand cottage and was likely used as a stable, later serving as a killing house. The cottages are two stories high, with an asymmetrical 1:1 window frontage onto the road. Stone rubble porches with lean-to slate roofs are positioned near the centre. The doors are from the 19th century. The first floor features centre-hung 2-light casement windows. The stable has plank doors. The rear elevation retains 19th-century 2-light casements in the original window openings.

The interiors remain largely unaltered, with the left-hand cottage containing a Cornish range manufactured in Wadebridge and a mid-19th century staircase with complete partitioning. The right-hand cottage has a circa early-19th century staircase, and the fireplace has been partially altered to accommodate a flue from the adjoining house. Both cottages have ceiling beams and roof structures, with principals halved, lapped and pegged at the apices, and collars that appear to have been raised. These are generally unaltered cottages of a simple 1-room plan.
