Description
The Wheel Inn is an inn that dates back to the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed from stone and cob, featuring wooden lintels and a thatched roof. The building has a two-room plan with an outshut at the rear and an extension at the lower end that is set at a slight angle. The front of the inn is long and low, with two storeys that slope down to the left. There are two windows and a door that is off-centre to the right. The window openings are irregularly spaced and at different heights. There is a ventilator window with vertical bars that serves an under-stair pantry, and a window near the door to the right that used to be wider, now with an internal recess. This window has a horizontally sliding sash above it, while the other windows are two-light casements with glazing bars. The right corner of the building is rounded. The extension on the lower left has a ground floor doorway that has been converted into a window, with a 20th-century window inserted above it. At the rear of the upper end, there is a lateral brick stack. Inside, the inn features open beamed ceilings and an old roof structure. It is noted that the Wheel Inn was used as headquarters by Fairfax during the Civil War, specifically during the Battle of Tresillian.
