Description

St Erney House is a late 18th-century house, with additions and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with some granite and greenstone, partly in cob and partly rendered. The roof is two-span, with the front slope in 20th-century slates and the rear in asbestos slate. Gable ends have stack with rendered shafts to the front range, and ridge tiles.

The original plan featured a central entrance leading to a double-depth layout, with principal rooms to the front left and right, a kitchen to the rear left, and an unheated dairy to the rear right. A central passage provided access to a rear stair. The original kitchen on the left rear was removed and converted into a larger room. A rear kitchen wing extends to the left, with an attached apple loft to the rear and a scullery to the rear left.

The house presents as a symmetrical three-window range. The front features a central panelled and glazed door, sheltered by a portico with slender granite columns supporting an entablature with a moulded cornice. Ground floor windows are primarily 3-light casements, while first floor windows are 2-light casements, all dating to the 20th century. The left side is rendered, with an external stack to the front range. A conservatory is attached to the left, accessible through an inner half-glazed door with sidelights. A 19th-century 12-pane sash window is on the first floor to the left, and a 20th-century 3-pane light to the right.

A projecting wash house sits to the left, with a single-story privy attached at the end. A single handmade ridge tile remains on the roof over the wash house. The rear wall of the wash house is rendered in cob. To the right side, the front and rear ranges are rendered and lined out. A 20th-century addition extends to the right. An 18th-century 2-light casement with leaded lights is found on the first floor to the right. The rear is also rendered and lined out. A 3-light casement illuminates the dairy on the ground floor to the left. A granite pig-salting trough with a heavy slate lid is attached to the base of the wall. On the first floor rear, two 20th-century 2-light casements are present. A brick stack rising from the eaves heats the original rear kitchen.

A mid-19th-century two-story kitchen wing extends to the rear center, with a gable end stack. A 4-panelled door and 20th-century casement are on the ground floor to the left, and two 19th-century 2-light casements are on the first floor. The gable end leading to the apple loft has an external stone stair. The apple loft is a two-story lean-to constructed of roughly coursed rubble, with two ventilation slits on each floor and a doorway at the top of the stair. A curved oven is built into the base of the kitchen stack, partially concealed by the apple loft. A two-story wash house adjoins the right side, with a door and 2-light casement on the ground floor and a 2-light casement on the first floor. A single-story shed is attached to the right, with a privy at the end.

Inside, the front entrance hall contains 6-panelled doors on both sides. The room to the right has a marble chimneypiece and a cupboard with shaped shelves. The room to the left features Delft tiles around the door to the conservatory. The straight stair to the rear of the passage has stick balusters and a column newel at the first floor. The dairy, located to the rear right, has a slate floor and slate shelves. Front rooms on the first floor have 4-panelled doors and 19th-century cast iron grates in the fireplaces.
