Description
The chimney stack at SW 713 442 is an isolated structure located on the site of the former Great North Downs Mine. It likely dates from the early 19th century or earlier. The stack is constructed from large blocks of granite rubble arranged in courses, along with brick. It has a circular plan and features three short stages that are successively set back, with the top stage made of brick and adorned with brick cornices at each end. The North Downs area was mined for copper starting in the early 18th century and became the largest copper venture in Cornwall. This small but sturdy chimney stack has a strong visual presence, which is enhanced by its smooth, grassy, and otherwise featureless surroundings.
