Description
Comford House is a house located in Gwennap, dating from the early 19th century, with a remodel in the mid-19th century that incorporates 18th-century walling in the rear wall. The exterior features painted killas and granite rubble, with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills, and lintels. It has a dry Delabole slate roof and brick chimneys at the gable ends.
Originally, the building likely consisted of two single-cell houses with a through passage at each end and a central passage between them. The mid-19th-century remodel transformed it into a single house with a central passage leading to a central stair, incorporating end passages into two equal flanking reception rooms. There is a single-storey wing attached at right angles to the right-hand rear corner, which was later extended.
The house is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-window south front with mid-19th-century 12-pane hornless sash windows. The central doorway is flanked by window openings that were originally doorways. The first floor originally had two wide window openings, which were reduced to match the original ground floor openings during the mid-19th-century remodel, with a new window opening inserted above the doorway at that time. The three first-floor openings now have brick jambs and shallow brick arches, with the joints of the former openings clearly visible with granite jambstones. The rear includes a blocked doorway to the right, opposite a former doorway at the front, and a corresponding doorway at the other end that links the house to the wing.
Inside, there is an original dog-leg stair with stick balusters, a chamfered newel post, and a turned pendant. The reception rooms have plain plaster ceilings. The house is included for its group value.
