Description
This is a churchyard cross located approximately 2.3 meters south of the south porch of the Church of Lanteglos by Fowey, dating from around the 13th century. The cross features a granite octagonal shaft that stands about 2.4 meters tall, tapering towards the top and adorned with carved foliage and blind tracery on alternating faces. At the top, it is surmounted by a square lantern with a gabled top and rounded pinnacled corners. The lantern includes carved recessed arched panels that depict the crucifixion, the Virgin and Child, and figures that may represent St Peter and St Paul. The cross was discovered in 1838 in a trench at the west end of the church and was re-erected on a millstone base in the churchyard. It is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
