Description
Halwell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1777, which incorporates some earlier structures and has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century and later. It is constructed from slatestone and greenstone rubble, with coursed stonework at the front and slate-hung upper levels. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring ridge tiles, and there is an end stack to the left, along with a 17th-century ashlar rear lateral hall stack that has a cornice. The right end does not appear to have a stack.
The building has a three-room plan, with one room on the left heated by the end stack, a passage, and two rooms on the right, with the hall heated by the rear lateral stack. It was remodeled in 1777, which included the addition of a stair tower at the rear of the passage and an outshut at the lower left end. There is also a 19th-century outshut at the rear of the hall and the inner room, along with a 19th-century granary attached to the rear left.
The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical four-window range. The first floor has four-pane sash windows, while the ground floor includes a four-pane sash window, a four-panelled door with a hipped slate hood, a four-pane sash with sidelights to the hall, and a two-light 20th-century casement. The left side has an external stack that is slate-hung, and the attached granary at the rear left is two-storey with a hipped roof and a door at the front. The outshut wraps around the right side, featuring a 20th-century stable door and two-light casements on the side and rear. At the rear, there is an external stair leading to the granary, which has a loft door with strap hinges. To the left, the single-storey outshut has a 20th-century eight-pane light. The stair tower has a hipped roof and a two-light eight-pane casement with L hinges and a splayed stone head. The rear lateral stack to the hall has a cornice and a curved oven at its base. The end outshut to the right is one storey with a loft, featuring a three-light 20th-century casement at ground level and a four-pane light in the loft. The interior is not accessible.
