Description
The schoolroom of the Wesley Methodist Church is a nonconformist chapel built in 1890 by Hine and Odgers of Plymouth, with W. Broad as the contractor and Oke of Launceston responsible for painting and glazing. The building features polychrome slatestone and other stone arranged to course, with granite quoins and Polyphant stone dressings, topped by a slate roof with a coped front gable. It has a rectangular plan, with the schoolroom situated above the reading room, and is two storeys high. The symmetrical gable end facing the street has a one-window range on the first floor, featuring a quatrefoil with a finial and kneelers above a five-light transomed mullioned window that retains its original coloured glass. This window is flanked by king mullions and is situated over a central doorway with a four-centred arch, which has an original diamond-panelled door and a blind overlight, flanked by two-light cross windows with a stepped hoodmould above. The side walls are rendered and have segmental-arched openings with casements that include glazing bars. Inside, the schoolroom has simple plastered walls and ceilings, a boarded dado, and panelled doors. There is also a stained glass memorial window by Fouracre dedicated to John Dingley.
