Description

The barn at Chyoon is a bank barn dating from the 17th century or earlier, with remodeling that occurred around the 18th century. It is constructed from snecked dressed granite boulders, featuring dressed granite quoins, while the upper courses are made of granite rubble. The roof is covered with scantle slate and has dressed granite coping and kneelers.

The barn has a small rectangular single-cell plan, with an entrance to the ground floor byre located on the southeast front. In the 18th century, it was raised to two storeys to create a barn and loft, with a doorway in the southwest gable end at a higher ground level.

The exterior consists of two storeys. The southeast front features a small square window on the right side of the ground floor and a doorway on the left, with a loft doorway situated above. The southwest gable end has a loft doorway on the left at the higher ground level. The rear, or northwest side, is blind, while the northeast gable end includes a small loft window on the right in the original gable, which was likely formed later. All openings are topped with granite lintels.

Inside, the loft floor is a later replacement, and the barn has a later three-bay roof supported by nailed collar trusses. This barn is a rare example of a small early farm building in the ancient Penwith landscape.
