Description
The Parish Church of St Just, dating mainly from the 15th century with some remains from the 14th century, is constructed from regular granite blocks. The church features a nave, chancel, and north and south aisles that are all under one roof, along with a west tower that has three stages and no buttresses. The south porch is adorned with battlements and pinnacles. Inside, there are six bay north and south arcades supported by limestone shafts and carved capitals, and the aisle windows are in the Perpendicular style. There are two remaining, much restored 15th-century wall paintings on the north wall of the aisle; others were lost during significant restoration in 1866, and the interior now has exposed random rubble walls. A stone in the north aisle, dating from the 5th to the 16th century, bears the inscription "SELUS IC IAC IT," which was found near the Oratory of St Helen at Cape Cornwall. Additionally, there is a cross shaft in the north wall. The Church of St Just, its churchyard wall, and No 4 form a group with the King's Arms Hotel and No 6 Market Square.
