SS 21 SW KILKHAMPTON

3/15 Shippon and Stables about 10 - metres north and north-east of Stowe Barton and wall adjoining Shippen GV II

Shippon and stables with lofts above on north and east side of farmyard to north of Stowe Barton. Mid C19. Slatestone rubble with some brick dressings, slate roofs. 2 long ranges of outbuildings. Range to the north of Stowe Barton consists of shippen and stables with loft above, 8 ground floor entrances, 3 first floor openings with ventilators. Range to the north-east has roof half hipped at right gable end and 2 first floor openings with slate canopies carried on brackets, first floor opening left has external stone stair. Tall wall connects west end of shippen to west end of outbuilding adjoining west gable end of Stowe Barton. Wall partly slatestone rubble, partly English bond local brick with 2 arched entrances, one into farmyard, one into yard at rear of Stowe Barton. Brick coping to wall, pigeon holes on farmyard side of wall. Wall included for group value, brick sections of wall probably part of Stowe, the home of the Grenville family, built 1679, demolished 1739.
