Description

The shippon and stables, located about 10 metres north and north-east of Stowe Barton, are mid-19th century outbuildings that feature lofts above. Constructed from slatestone rubble with some brick dressings and slate roofs, they form two long ranges of outbuildings. The range to the north of Stowe Barton includes a shippon and stables with a loft above, featuring eight ground floor entrances and three first floor openings with ventilators. The range to the north-east has a roof that is half hipped at the right gable end and includes two first floor openings with slate canopies supported by brackets. The left first floor opening has an external stone stair.

A tall wall connects the west end of the shippon to the west end of an adjoining outbuilding next to the west gable end of Stowe Barton. This wall is partly made of slatestone rubble and partly of English bond local brick, featuring two arched entrances—one leading into the farmyard and the other into the yard at the rear of Stowe Barton. The wall has brick coping and pigeon holes on the farmyard side. It is included for its group value, as the brick sections are likely part of Stowe, the former home of the Grenville family, which was built in 1679 and demolished in 1739.
