Description

Farmhouse. It largely dates to the 17th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The house is constructed of whitewashed rendered stone with a slate roof, hipped at the right end and gabled at the left. There are two brick chimneys, one a rendered projecting stack on a rear wing. The main range is a single depth, featuring a baffle entry. A rear stone stair runs parallel to the rear wall, potentially a winder stair which was formerly external to the main range, now incorporated into the rear wing. The former hall and inner room have been combined into one space. A rear wing, with a two-span hipped roof, creates a T-shaped plan. A pantry is located under the rear left span. The front of the house is two storeys high and has a centrally positioned porch with a pyramidal slated roof. There are three ground-floor timber casement windows: two to the left of the porch and one to the right, each a three-light casement with six panes per light, set under a segmental head. Four first-floor windows are present, including one large pair of three-pane sashes with horns. Three other first-floor windows are late 19th-century dormers with pairs of six-pane timber sashes and horns. A break in the front plane to the left of the porch suggests a rebuilding, likely at the right end. A room to the left of the entry has a large fireplace with freestone rubble jambs and a massive chamfered granite lintel, as well as a slate floor. The pantry to the rear left also features a slate floor and slate-topped benches and a table. Timber stairs are situated above the stone stairs. A 1694 map of the Grenville Estate, known as the Gascoyne map, depicts ‘Uper Scadgell’ as a range with a projecting wing and a smaller range parallel to the main range.
