Description
This cottage, located about 80 metres northeast of Stowe Barton, has its origins in the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It was formerly part of the kitchen block for Stowe, which was built in 1680 for John Grenville, Earl of Bath. The cottage is constructed of English bond brick and features a slate gabled roof. It has a two-cell and attic layout, with an entrance through a brick porch added in the 19th or early 20th century on the left gable end, and another entrance on the ground floor to the left.
The cottage has two ground floor windows, each with two lights and six panes per light. It is one storey high with attic space, and includes roof dormer windows at both the front and rear, as well as a platband at the front. Inside, the left ground floor room contains a massive fireplace that is partly blocked, along with a fireplace beam, one ceiling cross beam, and a partition wall made of stud with brick nogging. The fireplace and a map of Stowe from 1694 suggest that this cottage was part of the former kitchen block. The cottage is situated within the gardens of Stowe.
