Description
The No Man's Land War Memorial and Commemorative Cross is a granite cross erected in 1897 at Great Tree. It has been altered to commemorate subsequent coronations and the First World War. The memorial stands in a small paved area next to the village hall, facing north.
The cross features a Celtic-style design with an ornately carved face and a short shaft that rests on three large blocks forming its base. The original inscription on a plaque on the main block reads: 'VICTORIA/ QUEEN & EMPRESS/ ENCLOSED & PLANTED/ AS A MEMORIAL OF THE/ DIAMOND JUBILEE/ OF HER GLORIOUS REIGN/ 1897'. Above this, later inscriptions commemorate King Edward VII in 1902, King George V in 1911, and King George VI in 1937.
At the base of the memorial is a plaque dedicated to the First World War, which states: 'THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ IN EVER GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF/ (NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ THIS MEMORIAL STONE IS ERECTED BY THE/ PARISHIONERS OF ST MARTINS, BY-LOOE'.
Additionally, there is a plaque on the side of the memorial that reads: 'ERECTED/ BY/ THE PARISH/ TO/ COMMEMORATE/ THE/ DIAMOND JUBILEE/ OF/ QUEEN/ ELIZABETH II/ 1952-2012'.
