Methodist Church with Attached Sunday School and Coach House

A Methodist church with an attached Sunday school and coach house, dating to approximately 1816, with alterations and additions in 1862 and the 1870s. The church is constructed of slatestone rubble with Pentewan stone dressings and quoins, while the Sunday school and coach house have brick dressings. It has a slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable ends. The building's plan consists of a single auditorium with an entrance at the front gable end, oriented east to west. Attached to the rear is a two-storey addition, likely from 1862, incorporating a coach house and stabling at ground floor level and a Sunday school on the first floor.

The front gable end features C19 panelled double doors within a cambered brick arch. Above the doors is a round-arched window with Pentewan stone dressings, a keystone, and 8 panes set in a Gothic glazing bar pattern. A circular brick recess sits above the window. The left side of the church has two round-arched windows with Pentewan stone arches, while the right side mirrors this with two similar windows, both containing late C19 sashes with margin glazing. A straight joint in the masonry marks the division between the church and the attached addition. The left side of the addition has plank double doors under a timber lintel and a brick relieving arch, and a single half-glazed C19 door with sidelights and a cambered brick arch to the right. The first floor of the addition has two margin-glazed sashes with cambered brick arches. The right side of the Sunday school also features two similar sashes at the first floor level. At the rear, a shallow two-storey brick addition incorporates a stair with a plank door on the ground floor, and a late C19 margin-glazed sash window with a round arch on the first floor. The interior was not inspected, but may contain features from the early 19th century, such as panelling and church fittings. Records indicate that in 1814 Joseph Lawry of Tregarthen requested a license from the Bishop of Exeter for a Wesleyan meeting house at Highlanes, and the building appears to have been completed by 1816.
