Description
The Fishponds War Memorial is located in a small suburban park in the Fishponds area of Bristol, east of the Grade II-listed Church of St Mary and the old school house, which includes Numbers 11, 13, and 15 and an attached wall, also Grade II*-listed. A Grade II-listed drinking fountain is situated to the south-east of the memorial. Originally, the memorial was surrounded by railings.
The memorial features three broad octagonal concrete steps, measuring approximately 4 meters across for the first step, 3 meters for the second, and 2 meters for the third. Atop these steps is a rough-hewn granite plinth that is about 2.3 meters high and 1 meter wide. A life-sized bronze sculpture of a soldier stands on the plinth, holding his helmet in his left hand and a rifle in his right hand, though the rifle is missing its original bayonet. Below the sculpture, a bronze scroll displays the inscription "1914 – VICTORY – 1918."
Each side of the granite plinth features a bronze panel listing the names of the fallen from the parish. The front panel reads "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY/ GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT/ (NAMES)/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'." The inscriptions on the other three panels also read "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY/ (NAMES)/ 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'." Additionally, a small bronze plaque on the rear face of the plinth honors Frederick G. Room V.C., of the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, with the dates 1895 – 1932.
