Description

Numbers 11, 13, and 15 are a house and former school built around 1720, which was converted into a schoolroom in the late 18th century. The building is constructed from thin Pennant rubble with rubble quoins and limestone dressings, featuring two rubble ridge stacks and a double Roman hipped roof with cross wings at each end. It has an H-shaped single-depth plan with a central hall and attached end houses, standing two storeys tall with a four-window range. The symmetrical front has two wings at either end, with a central pedimented porch that contains a round-arched doorway featuring a key, impost bands, and benched niches inside. The door is a four-plank design with ovolo mouldings in a pegged frame with a segmental head. Full-height, segmental-arched windows flank the porch, featuring 16/16 pane sashes with thick bars. The projecting two-storey wings have 6/6 pane sashes in flush boxes on the right, while the left side has 20th-century replacements. A plaque on the left side reads "HANNAH MORE/ BORNE HERE/ FEB 2 1745." There are ridge stacks on either side of the central bay, and the rear elevation is similar but without a door. The right-hand return features a three-window-range symmetrical front with a similar door, flat rubble window heads, and first-floor windows beneath the wall plate. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have a central hall with fireplaces at each end. The property includes a low rubble wall to the front and side areas. Historically, it is significant as the birthplace of Hannah More, a notable educational reformer, and is recognized as a rare early schoolroom. The building is valued for its historical and architectural importance and has group value with the nearby Church of St Mary.
