Description
The White Hart Inn is a public house located on Lower Maudlin Street in Bristol, dated 1672 and refronted in the 19th century. It features a rendered timber-frame construction with three rear lateral stacks and a double Roman roof that is hipped to the left. The building has a single-depth plan, stands three storeys tall with a basement, and has a three-window range.
The front is irregular, showcasing a banded ground floor beneath a timber cornice, with a pilaster strip on the left end that leads to a steeply ramped parapet. The roof is divided into two sections, with the wider right-hand part being steeper and featuring a small 20th-century dormer. There are two 19th-century doorways and a left-hand window, all with pilaster jambs, raised panels, a fascia, and cornice. The double doors include margin lights, and there is a three-light mullion and transom casement window.
On the first floor, the left-hand section has paired 2/2-pane horned sash windows in flush frames, while the second floor has a sash window with margin panes and a small horned sash to the left of centre. A right-hand 20th-century extension includes a single window. The left return features a single-storey brick wall with a parapet and a moulded string that curves around to the rear, topped with a hipped roof.
The interior has been extensively altered. Attached to the left side of the building is a coursed limestone wall, which is related to the walls and gateway of St James' Church. The right-hand side of the inn is the earlier part of the structure.
