Description

49 and 50 Queen Square are a pair of attached houses built around 1780. They are constructed of brick with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and a pantile mansard roof. Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a two-window range. The symmetrical design includes a first-floor sill band, a cornice band, and a parapet. The paired doorways are located in the middle, set in shallow recesses, and have rubbed brick flat arches with cambered heads, plate-glass overlights, and 6-panel doors. The ground floor features single 8/8-pane sashes with cambered heads and five stepped voussoirs, while the upper floor has 6/6-pane sashes and two dormers on each house.

Inside, there is an entrance hall with a panelled semicircular arch leading to a rear dogleg stair that has stick balusters, a curtail, and a wreathed rail. The cornice features palmettes in the corners, and there are fireplaces, 6-panel doors, and panelled shutters throughout. Queen Square was developed between 1701 and 1727, and much of the western side was rebuilt following the Reform Bill riots of 1831.
