Description

Phoenix House is an attached house dating to approximately 1833, possibly designed by Henry Rumley. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with party wall stacks and a pantile roof. The building follows a double-depth plan and is executed in a Neoclassical style. It has three storeys, a basement and an attic, and is arranged with a three-window front. The symmetrical facade has a banded ground floor, first-floor panelled pilasters with anthemion capitals to the frieze, a cornice, and a parapet. The central bay projects forward, featuring a bowed open portico supported by Roman Doric columns leading to an entablature. A chamfered door surround frames a six-panel door, above which is a panel inscribed "PHOENIX HOUSE". The first floor has a pedimented lintel with acroteria and wreaths above the central window, and houses six-pane sash windows. A large carved Phoenix is positioned in the centre of the parapet.

The interior features a central hall with an elliptical arch leading to a lateral, open dogleg staircase. This staircase has turned balusters, a wreathed and ramped rail with a star inlaid within the wreath. Good marble fireplaces are present in the ground and first-floor rooms, along with a fire surround in the basement. Cornices are decorated with anthemia and guilloche motifs. Six-panel doors and panelled shutters are also original features.

Queen Square was developed between 1701 and 1727, and much of the west side was rebuilt after the Reform Bill riot of 1831. The property also includes attached front area railings with anthemia finials and piers.
