Description

A terrace of twelve houses located on Gloucester Row in Clifton, built around 1790 and significantly altered around 1860, with number 2 retaining earlier fabric. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar and render, with party wall stacks and a pantile roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, each house spanning three storeys plus an attic and basement, and featuring a two-window range.

The terrace presents an uneven facade with banded ground floors extending to a moulded string course. Full-height recessed bands mark the party walls, complemented by rusticated quoin strips, sill bands, fluted brackets, and a cornice. A parapet with blind balustrades sits above the windows. Number 2 stands out with a right-hand doorway framed by attached Doric columns, an entablature, and an open pediment. The doorway itself is semicircular-arched, featuring a plate-glass fanlight and a six-panel door, all set within a stucco surround. The remaining houses have banded porches with attached columns, fluted brackets, cornices, a two-pane overlight with margin panes, and six-panel doors, the upper four raised. Number 11 lacks a doorway, while number 12 has a plain 20th-century replacement.

The ground-floor windows are paired, with a tripartite arrangement at number 10. Architraves are positioned above the windows, with raised cornices and brackets to the first floor. The attic storeys vary; numbers 1, 9, and 11 have individual attic windows with a central balustrade panel, while numbers 4-6, 8, 10, and 11 have paired, keyed segmental-headed windows topped with pediments (segmental at numbers 6, 8, and 11). Numbers 3 and 7 incorporate a third storey with a full-width pediment, featuring recessed windows with keys. First-floor cast-iron balconies are fitted with lattice railings, with number 2’s balcony being bowed.

The interior of number 12 includes an open dogleg staircase with cast-iron splat balusters, six-panel doors, and panelled shutters. Attached cast-iron front basement area railings are a significant subsidiary feature.
